Biography
Between 1983 and 1988, he studied piano in the class of Prof. Kazimierz Gierżod, and between 1988 and 1994, he studied composition under the supervision of Prof. Włodzimierz Kotoński at the F. Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw. He honed his skills during composition workshops led by, amongst others, Hanna Kulenta, Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, Michael Nyman, Louis Andriessen and Tristan Murail. As a pianist and composer, he has taken part in numerous contemporary music festivals, such as World Music Days (Warsaw, Seoul), „Warsaw Autumn”, „Poznań Music Spring” and „Musica Polonica Nova” (Wrocław). He was awarded grants by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, the City of Warsaw and the ZAiKS Authors’ Association. In 2013, his solo CD was released as part of the Polish Composers’ Union’s „Muzyka Polska Dzisiaj” series.
In the 1990s, as a member of the MM Group, Jarosław Siwiński worked at the intersection of theatre, music and the visual arts, composing music for animated films (including those by Jan Lenica, Daniel Szczechura, Marcin Giżycki, Agnieszka Skolik and Tomasz Kozak), theatre and computer games. He has collaborated with, amongst others, Eugeniusz Rudnik, Fryderyk Rzewski, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Orchest De Ereprijs, the Viktor Lois/Yin Peet duo, the Azorro Group, the Bang On a Can ensemble (New York) and the Forbidden City Chamber Orchestra (Beijing). As a pianist and composer, he has collaborated with the Poznań Centre for Children’s Art for over 20 years.
In addition to music in the classical sense – instrumental, vocal and electronic – his creative interests also include sound installations and the autonomous piano.
Jarosław Siwiński is also the co-author of numerous artistic and educational projects, such as „Audio Stage”, „Images from Warsaw”, „Contemporary Music Doesn’t Bite” and „Tell Me a Fairy Tale”. Since 2017, he has served as artistic director of the Warsaw Music Encounters – a festival organised by the Polish Composers’ Union.
